Cradle to Grave - Episode 3 Media analysis

Lighting: The effects of lighting on a scene, this can be light through weather or objects such as lamps.

Camera: The camera angle, this ca be close up expressions of a face or camera shots of important factors in a show.

Mise-en scene: This can be what the characters are wearing, for example older clothes may represent a older character or a show set in the past.

Sound: Sound can work with lighting to set the mood for a scene, the music used may relay a feeling or emotion to the audience.

The beginning of the program has a Joyful sound to it with the music playing this is to ease the audience into the program by showing that the people in the camera shot are happy. The camera shows A man and a woman walking through a rural area near flats, there are children on bikes and running around to show that the area shown is nice. The lighting at the beginning is bright to also show that the area is nice. The man and woman are wearing casual clothes to present that the area shown is casual. After this the camera shot moves to a group of youths which are shown in a dim light, almost making them look dark. The sound changes to a commentary which makes light of the situation although it would seem bad otherwise. They are wearing normal clothes to show that they are a normal group of teenagers. The camera shot clearly shows what is happening. The camera shot then jumps to a living room which is shown in a bright lighting clearly showing the faces of those in the camera shot. People are the talking about what happened at the time the boy is talking about. Later on it shows the two boys sitting in the living room of the house going through old music disks, the camera shows the scene in a more comedic way, when one boy says that they can be bought for 50p the camera shows the current value of the CD at £1,500. The lighting in the room is bright to show that the situation is casual and comedic. The mise-en-scene so far shows the time period of the show, this is through hat the characters are wearing and the technology in which they own. The camera angles are natural and fixed and the comedy is aimed towards modern viewers as it makes older technology look futuristic. The cars are shown clearly in shots to establish the time period more clearly. The time in which the show is set is also shown through the narrative of the characters in the show. For example he owes £100 for a video recorder which doesn't seem like too much now but was worth allot more in the time. The camera angles tend to be fixed, for example the camera may show an up-close shot of the face to specify the expression of the character which aids in understanding how they are feeling. The other camera shots seem to jump back and forth between those in conversation to show the ones who are talking. So far the lighting seems to be bright in general which reinforces the fact that the show is intended to be seen as a comedy. The lighting changes depending on the mood of the scene, for example when they are trying to steal wine from the docks they do it at night which means there is minimum lighting on the set. This sets the mood for the scene in which the new security guards talk about the the fact that the dock workers may lose their jobs soon if they don't take the £1500 they have been offered to leave. Overall the lighting used has been presented to show the mood of a scene. The camera angle has been fixed to those who are talking and zoom-ins on the expressions of the characters in a scene, this is to allow the audience to clearly see the current emotions of characters in the show. Miss-en-scene is used to show the time period of the show, for example the clothes that the actors and actresses are wearing are from a while ago and aren't likely to be worn in todays society, this shows the fact that the show is set in the past. Also the colours which are used on the set can also be seen as to set the mood, the colours are mostly bright. E.g. Green walls and cream wallpaper, this can show that the area which they are in is a happy environment. There are very little sound effects which are used during the show. This can show that the show is shown to be natural and is meant to reflect the time period and using no special sound effects shows a sense of realism in the show. Other than sound effects most of the show contains joking among other people which confirms the fact that the show is a comedy.
